When is a blog not a blog?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Or for more frequent updates you can follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!

When it’s a website that has been built using wordpress for convenience. Wordpress is a great CMS system and I love it. It’s so easy to set up and equally easy to use. There’d have to be a very good reason for me to NOT use wordpress on a web project these days otherwise I will, because I’m lazy and it’s easy.

I’ve recently launched a new small project, and it’s built on top of wordpress. The only thing blog like about it is that the content presentation is time based but really there are many non-blogs where the content is ordered chronologically by time.

Why am I rambling/ranting away?

I know I need to get links and attention to this website otherwise it’s going to go nowhere. And my first plan was to submit to a few of the top directories. My first submission was to the best of the web directory and I was a little apprehensive in case they discriminated against my website purely because it was built using wordpress.

They did :( .

I have to wait six months before I can submit my ‘blog’. I’m just a poor student I don’t want to be throwing away £40 because some editor decides that my website is technically a blog. What if I had recreated the whole website just not with wordpress? It would have taken me far longer is what, and I guess would have been more likely to be accepted into the directory.

The website in question, which is not a blog, is about Harry Potter and is about as unbloglike as a ‘blog’ could be. There are no categories, there is navigation. There are no prominent RSS feeds, there is a newsletter. There’s no calendar or time based archives, there is just a sitemap. Sure you can comment on all the content but any website keeping up with the times should allow comments!

I guess I should get over it and work on other ways to build traffic and attention.

This also means I’m allowed to resubmit one URL but I don’t have any websites or blogs that would qualify. If, however, you have either a blog that is six months old or more, or a website, that you would like submitted to best of the web, give me a shout and I may just submit it.

Hi, I found your blog via Blogging Fingers, very enjoyable work! I checked out your Harry Potter site and think it looks great. You should consider adding a store to it, selling Harry Potter stuff as an ebay affiliate. Email me if you want to know about the software I am using for a similar project relating to fishing.

I’m adding you to my RSS feed, and plan to feature some ofyour posts in my Weekly “Sunday Seven”.

Cheers Suzanne – I may drop you a line at some point. The Harry Potter site is not really generating any traffic yet (nothing significant anyhow).
